When you think of Number 1 and number 2 driver, you think of Michemery and Carre, Michemery has openly admitted to helping Carre in his title quest even before the half-way mark of the season. However, a statistical look at the qualifying and race battle between them reveals a much more balanced picture, Carre has beaten Michemery 5-3 in qualifying and 6-3 in the race. Considering that Michemery reportedly let Carre through in Hungary and gifted him the win in Spain by holding up the Greek MichaelAngelo, it is definitely possible that Michemery could be ahead of Carre had he not done him so many favours, as there is only a 19 point gap between the 2 Mercedes drivers.
Penalties have decided a lot of positions this season, thus drivers who have managed to keep it within the limits have benefited a lot. Let’s take a look:

The 2 Williams drivers top the table, with Yhyy comfortably leading. Too put this into context, the average race length of the circuits completed is 31 laps. Yhyy on average gets 1 second worth of penalty every 28 laps, thus almost never receives a 3 second penalty across the entire race.  You would think this correlates with winning form but interestingly, Carre (2[sup]nd[/sup] in the championship) has one of the worse scores for current drivers. So, a balance between pushing the limits of the track for speed and staying within them seems the best strategy.
Table showing how many laps a driver drives until he receives 1 seconds worth of penalty. Example: If Ne-yo1993 drives 15 laps and gets one 3 second penalty up to that point, his average would be 5.0 (15/3 = 5)
